Maintain Healthy Habits During the Holidays

At Long Island Foot & Ankle Group, PC, we know that a healthy lifestyle helps your feet stay healthy too. Staying active and maintaining an appropriate weight reduces strain on your feet and keeps them flexible and fully functioning. We also know that the holidays can be a time when healthy habits go out the window. For the health of your feet (and the rest of your body) try to keep up good habits.

Keep Moving. If you can’t fit in your usual hour at the gym, sneak activity into your day. Choose a parking spot at the far end of the mall parking lot and speed walk to the stores. Make multiple trips up the stairs to carry in your purchases. Divide your exercise routine in half and do it in two shorter segments if one big block of time is hard to come by.

Eat Right. Yes, there are lots of tempting treats around during the holidays, but devise strategies that let you enjoy without overdoing it. Eat mindfully—have one or two of your favorite Christmas cookies and a single portion of chips. Don’t sit near snacks where you can just keep dipping into the bowl. Try to plan healthy meals and keep plenty of fruits, vegetables, nuts and other nutritious snacks handy. Alternate alcoholic drinks at a party with glasses of water to reduce calories and help you feel full.

Rest Up. Studies show that people who don’t get enough sleep are more prone to overeating and weight gain. Being well rested reduces stress too—another reason people tend to overeat.

Listen to Your Body. Know when to say “no.” It’s okay to skip a party or buy fewer gifts or make a less-elaborate holiday dinner. If your feet or ankles begin to hurt, take breaks and put them up several times throughout the day. If this doesn’t bring relief, contact our Valley Stream (516-825-4070 ) or Lake Success (516-327-0074) office today so that our foot and ankle surgeons, Dr. Russell Caprioli, Dr. Mary Ann Bilotti, Dr. John Haight or Dr. Marzana Mleczko can diagnose your problem and prescribe the correct treatment.
